A late night at Green Acres Park brought a 3rd game rematch against the only team in the Esler league that the Lugnuts have no wins against, sporting a 0-1-1 record up to this point. The Bat Boys always pose a tough challenge with their methodical base running and solid defense. That proved to bring them a day late and several runs short as the Lugnuts come through in a rare MSBL extra innings, beating the Bat Boys 7-5 after some grit and tenacity.
Carlos Tumpkin got the start on the bump for the first time this year and proved to dominate the Bat Boys at the plate, striking out 7 out of 9 outs in 3 innings. Carlos would struggle to consistently hit the zone, also walking 6 in 3 innings, hitting a batter, but only giving up one bloop hit. The Lugnuts infield would fall victim to the Bat Boys' speedy baserunning, and throw the ball around little league style several times this game, causing them to give up 4 runs in 3 innings with Carlos on the mound. They would then give up 1 unearned run in the next 5 innings.
The bats came around quick for the Lugnuts, with highlights from Jake Thompson, Tyler Younes, and Pedro Ramirez, who had 7 combined hits between the 3. Jake Thompson continues to be a menace on the base path and ties the league for most runs scored along with Carlo Russo, who had none in this contest. Pedro Ramirez being second in the league for runs scored with 22. The Lugnuts went up 5-4 in the 4th inning after a centerfield dropped flyball on the Bat Boys.
Kaden Cichoski came in and threw 3 shutdown innings with 0 earned runs, 3 weak hits given up, 4 Ks, and only 1 walk. The Bat Boys could not seem to keep production going when the walks were taken away from them, only having 5 hits in 8 innings. Jack Athos came in to close in the 7th throwing gas, with 3 Ks in 2 innings himself, bringing the total strikeouts delivered to the Bat Boys to 14.
This win felt necessary for the Lugnuts, especially since the shortstop on the Bat Boys loves to chirp every game, even when striking out in all 3 at-bats in some of the matchoffs between these 2 teams. The phrase of the game was "What are they doing?", which the Lugnuts answered by getting the win with a 2 RBI bomb from Pedro Ramirez in the 8th inning. The Lugnuts hope to see the Bat Boys again in the second round of the playoffs, where they look to lead the series 2-1-1.
That brings the Lugnuts win streak to 6; 4 of them being close games. The Lugnuts continue to find ways to win and keep their sights on maintaining 1st place in the league.
