White Sox Fall to veteran Dodgers, 7-6
After controlling the game through five, Sox succumb to big hit and old tricks; pickoff ends game with tying run on 2nd base, go-ahead run on 1st
REDFORD (Capitol Park) – Close, but no cigar. The White Sox could not close the deal on the Dodgers, even with a 6-3 lead in the middle of the fifth, and Brian Riley tallied a complete-game win against Dan Treharne’s complete-game, one run loss.
The Dodgers struck for three runs in the bottom of the first, but the Sox scored four on consecutive hits by Endo, Miyasato, Pullis, Chastang and Welt. The Dodgers cut down an aggressive baserunner on the last single to end the inning.
Treharne continued his streak of strong outings, matching Riley by striking out five. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, he followed the direction of the manager in pitching around Myron Gardner, and pitching to Gary Alatchanian. “Buddha” made the Southsiders pay, doubling over the head of right fielder Curtis Mosley, and eventually scoring the winning run after a White Sox error.
The White Sox did manage to put two men on base in the top of the sixth, but the baserunner was tagged out by shortstop Rick Lowenstein with a hidden ball, to end the game with the oldest trick in the book.
Treharne got the loss despite yielding only four hits. “Hats off to the Dodgers, they kept their cool even when behind. And, I’m proud of the team our effort tonight” offered Sox manager Erik Lindquist. “We did just about all the right stuff throughout the game. But then, we also did some other stuff. I’m looking forward to playing them again next week and expect we can maintain our poise.”
The White Sox remain two games back of the Homant-leading Angels. Next up are the Orioles Aug 21; Dodgers Aug 23; and Cardinals Aug 25.
