Rich Cleve tossed a complete game, shutting out the Red Sox for the last six innings as the 42 Cardinals evened up their season record at 4-4 enroute to a 9-2 win over the Red Sox at Hazel Park Thursday night.
A couple of Cardinal errors led to two unearned runs to give the Red Sox a 2-0 first inning lead, but after that Cleve sailed through with minimal stress. The Cardinal bats came alive in the 3rd when Ron Elswick (3-3, double, RBI) lined a single up the middle. After Mike Hanafee walked and a Texas league single by Glenn Triest, Ed Collins walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. Hanafee scored on a fielder's choice by Ed Pevos to tie the game and Dave Feeny hustled out an infield hit, scoring Triest to give the Cards a 3-2 lead.
In the sixth, Pevos reached on a fielder's choice and scored from second on a throwing error, as Dave Feeny moved into scoring position to make it 4-2. With 2 outs, Feeny scored on a single by Kevin Tardivi to increase the lead to 5-2.
The Cardinals broke it open in the 7th, scoring four runs. Three consecutive doubles by Rob Chafin, Elswick and Hanafee scored two runs. After Hanafee stole 3rd, he scored on an RBI groundout by Triest. Collins followed with a single and Triest who was running for Collins ran through a stop sign at 3rd, scoring on Pevos' double to make it 9-2.
The defensive star of the game was Dave Feeny, filling in at shortstop, making several outstanding plays to back Cleve.
The Cards will take on the Angels Sunday at Novi High School
