CUBS SMACK THE "DAYLIGHTS" OUT THE BALL BEAT PIRATES 14-2
19 HIT ATTACK FEATURES 2 CUB-A-THONS! GODLEY GIVES UP 1 HIT ARBOGAST CLOSES THE DOOR
The Cubs finished their long "5 game road-trip" with a game at Bishop Foley High vs the Pirates. All hands were on board for a lovely Sunday ball game in the sunshine. A welcome change (apparently) to the hungry Cub hitters. After scratching out only 4 hits in the late evening vs the A's the Cubs would give the Pirate hurlers all they could handle - banging out 19 hits, pitching well and playing mostly good defense.
Top of the first the Cubs featured a slightly changed line up with Donnie Hill leading off. After Hill popped out Chris Godley singled and stole second. Mark Franklin banged a base hit to left moving Chris to 3rd. After a wild pitch brought home the first run. Adam Barret smacked an rbi base hit.
Chris Godley got the win going the first 4 innings. Godley K'd 4 and hit 2 Pirates. He looked like vintage Godley for the first 2 innings but the Cubs bats kept him sitting too long perhaps to keep up the no-hit bit he carried to the 4th inning.
Top of the 2nd the Cubs sent 7 men to the plate. Eric Toysa singled and stole 2nd. Vangoss walked and Ed Benjamin belted an rbi single to center. A couple wild pitches later and the cubs had scored again. Josh Allen singled and Donnie Hill stroked a ball in the alley for 2 more rbi. Top of the 3rd was the 1st actual Cub-a-thon - started by a walk to Franklin, and a smash to the wall by Adam Barrett to score 1 more. Hammond was next and took one for the team. Will Boyd Jr singled and loaded the bases for Will Taylor. Taylor smacked a solid single for 2 rbi pushing the score to 9-0.
In the bottom of the 4th Godley dropped a lead off pop up and then surrendered the only base hit he'd allow this Sunday. Pirates 2 and Cubs 9 sounded good but it all got better at the plate for the Cubs. After a quick top of the 4 that saw only Josh Allen's 2nd hit. The Cubs started their 2nd Cub-a-thon to start the 5th. Hill flew out to center, but Godley sngled. Franklin bashed a ball for a line drive hit and Barrett erased him on a fielder's choice. With 2 on and 2 out Hammond took another ball in the back side and loaded the bases for Will Boyd Jr. Boyd singled hard for an rbi. Will Taylor followed with another hard hit ball and 2 rbi. Eric Toysa then drove another base hit to center for another Cubs run. 13-2 Cubs after 5 innings had Krusty smiling and waving at strangers in the crowd. Top of the 6 Josh Allen banged out his 3rd hit and moved up on Travis Arbogast's hard line drive sinlge. Joel Daniels joined in the fun with fielder's choice that brought home the 14th run.
Both Ryan Barnes and Kelvin Smith made contributions to this game. And applause to Will Taylor for a strong catch going back to the left field fence to end the 1st inning. Josh Allen also made a fine running catch in center.
Krusty told reporters after the game: I look like a smart manager, today.
